Easy crochet knit-look hat pattern for men and boys. This hat pattern uses the center single crochet (also called the waistcoat stitch) to make it look knit.

Know a guy who loves the look of knitted things, but you struggle to make things for him because you don’t know how to knit? This easy knit look beanie is the answer because this basic beanie pattern for men uses a crochet stitch that looks like knitting! The center single crochet (also called the “Waistcoat stitch”) achieves the same look, but without the knitting needles–you’ll “knit” with your crochet hook instead!

A crochet stitch that looks like knitting! This stitch makes the warmest hats for your guys this winter.

Even if it looks complex, the crochet technique is a simple one to master, and after a few minutes you’ll be crocheting knit-look beanies for the men and boys in your life like a pro. Find a picture tutorial showing how to crochet knit stitch in the round over here, or scroll down for written instructions.

100% wool yarn makes for a hat that is warm and comfortable in winter. Wool will stay warm even in wet weather. The yarn I recommend for this crochet hat pattern is a thinner worsted weight, which means it will still have nice drape when you use relaxed tension for your center single crochet stitches. If you do not wish to use wool yarn, you may substitute with Caron “Simply Soft”, or Lion Brand “Heartland”. Be sure you make a gauge swatch so your crochet hat does not come out too small or too large.

Additional Supplies (Optional):

Stitch Glossary:

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet (worked in center of post. See notes below)
  • FPsc = front post single crochet
  • BPsc = back post single crochet
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • prev = previous

Special stitches:
All sc in hat body are worked as center single crochet.

Center single crochet stitches are what give this hat a “knit” look. The crochet stitch is completed in the same way as a regular single crochet. The only difference is where you insert your hook. Instead of putting your hook through the top part of the stitch, you will insert it in the center of the post, between the 2 vertical lines that the loop you draw up makes. Loose tension is absolutely paramount to the success of this stitch when making hats or other wearable accessories, otherwise the fabric will be too stiff. The finished hat should be thick and warm, but the wearer should not feel like they are wearing a helmet. The loops I drew up to make my center single crochet stitches were about 1/2” tall (measured from where they came through at the center of the stitch). Find a detailed picture tutorial over here if you still need help visualizing the crochet knit stitch.

Finished Measurements:

  • 0-3 mos hat: 4 ½” tall, 7” wide (14-16″ head circumference)
  • 3-6 mos: 5” tall, 7 ½” wide (15-17” head circumference)
  • 6-12 mos: 5 ½” tall, 8” wide (16-18” head circumference)
  • Toddler (1-2 yrs): 6” tall, 9” wide (18-20” head circumference)
  • Child (4-8 yrs): 7” tall,10” wide (20-22” head circumference)
  • Teen/Small Adult: 8” tall, 10 ½” wide (21-23” head circumference)
  • Med/Large Adult: 8 ½” tall, 11” wide (22-24 head circumference)
  • X-Large Adult: 9” tall, 11 ½” wide (23-25” head circumference)

Gauge:

  • 4 3/4” across after round 9, or 5 1/4 after round 10
  • 12 sc in 4”, 4 rows gives 1” of height.

Additional Notes and Information:
Please read through the pattern and all notes before you begin, paying special attention to the techniques used.

  • Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as a stitch.
  • All rounds are joined with a slip stitch
  • All sc sts are worked as center single crochet.
  • Relaxed tension is a must for working the knit stitch. Go up a hook size or two if needed.
  • Measure your hat to make sure it is long enough before you start the band. Add more rounds of center single crochet if the hat is too short.
